From Library Instruction Wiki

Thanks to the WikiSysOp for helping me keep the Spam out of the wiki! Wallin

What about Nings?

Sam: Will you add a section about nings? There is an academic library one at OSU - contact me for contact details if you don't have them...Cool wiki!

Thanks - I just did a search over at Ning (I'm assuming you mean the "build your own social network" tool at ning.com, right? There's lots of library related ning groups there, so maybe I'll make a little profile of some kind. Heck, maybe libraries who do the 2.0 project could start by creating a Ning account for their own project, and having their members join as part of the project... Sam

Hi all. This is a fantastic wiki page and kudos to the author{s). In the spirit of collaboration, here are some suggestions.

  1. I'm assuming anybody has noticed the spam at the bottom of this page! I've deleted the links for loans that were under a div style="display:none" tag. There may be more out there in the discussion sections of pagse, I haven't looked.
  2. For the general tips section, would you consider adding a recent post by Laura Cohen on "Action Plan for a 2.0 library (http://liblogs.albany.edu/library20/2007/03/action_plan_for_a_20_library.html)"
  3. Could include Lawrence Lessig's blog (http://www.lessig.org/blog/) in the creative commons section
  4. Could include a link to the wikipedia entry on XML (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XML) in the html/xml section, since the handy cheatsheet (which i've now bookmarked, cheers!) only refers to html tags.
  5. Could include information on FeedReader (http://www.feedreader.com) on the RSS section, since it's not web-based, is ludicrously simple to use and has a very similar interface to most desktop-based email readers like Outlook. Could also mention that Outlook 2007 ships with heavy RSS integration, as well as IE7.
  6. worth including a link to TechPresident (http://www.techpresident.com) on the social networking sites, perhaps instead of the barack obama one?
  7. Finally, an advert for something I've written! How and Why To Use RSS Feeds (http://www.rin.ac.uk/why-subscribe) It's written for a target audience of researchers and librarians. Might fit somewhere like the rss section.

Thanks for the great suggestions, Borrodell! I've added most of the links you suggested, and tracked down some others along the way to flesh things out. I'm still looking over the Techpresident blog group - I'm not sure if it falls in the same category of social networking as other social networking sites. It looks like there are around 20 bloggers that contribute to the blog and it's various materials. There is a way to sign in and get updates and newsletters, and the creators definitely encourage readers to make suggestions, but unless I'm missing something, there doesn't seem to be a way for readers to network with each other, build profiles, or directly add content. It's an interesting site in its own right, however, so I'll keep it in mind for other things. Again, thanks for the input, I really appreciate it!

You're very welcome! Fair point about techpresident, maybe not so appropriate for the context - was just an idea because I could see you wanted to remain neutral. Thanks for adding my bit about the how and why of rss feeds. Good luck with this continuing resource! Cheers --Borrodell 10:32, 21 Mar 2007 (London, UK)

spammers

Well, the spammers keep coming back, and we keep reverting the site to previous versions. If you come to the site and it looks like spammers have gotten to it, check the history and look for the last version by "Wallin" and try that one. Rest assured, I'll revert to the good version asap.
