Second Life
Thursday July 03rd, 2008From Library Instruction Wiki
Well, I was going to go into Second Life and see what all the hoopla is about, but here's what happened: I signed up, and got a profile, but I couldn't download the Second Life program onto my computer for two reasons - first, I don't have administrative access. With permission to proceed, I ran into the second roadblock: I don't have the right kind of video card in my computer to run the software. If I was really gung-ho, I would do this from my home computer, but there I have dial-up, and as you might imagine, anything real-time and graphically rich is going to be nearly impossible. So for now, a Second Life tutorial and examination by me is going to be shelved. However, you should read about the various ways that Second Life is being used by librarians. Here is a link to the InfoIsland blog - InfoIsland is a library in Second Life. http://www.infoisland.org/
Also, check out their About page (http://infoisland.org/about/). If you read the Shifted Librarian (http://www.theshiftedlibrarian.com/), or other library blogs, keep your eyes open for Second Life themed posts.
Another task: Search for Second Life in Technorati, and see what other bloggers are saying about it.
In Second Life and in Facebook? Join the Librarians in Second Life (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2395106896) group.
