Do Your Own Podcasting
- Browse through some articles and resources at the UIS Podcasting Resource (http://www.uis.edu/podcasting/resources/index.html). The 'make your own podcast' section appears to be focused on Macs.
- Check out Create Podcasts With A PC (http://www.windowsdevcenter.com/pub/a/windows/2005/04/05/create_podcasts_with_pc.html) at O'Reilley's WindowsDevCenter.
- To create podcasts, you'll likely need to download a program onto your computer. There are open source podcast programs available, as well as programs that you can purchase.
- Open Source Podcast Software:
- Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/), which requires that you also get the LAME mp3 encoder (http://lame.sourceforge.net/index.php).
- Proprietary Podcast Software (costs money):
- SnapKast (http://snapkast.com/)
- GarageBand 3 (http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/) (for Macs)
- Other options:
- BlogTalkRadio (http://www.blogtalkradio.com/) - you create an account and perform your show live over the phone. Shows are recorded and archived. Listeners have a phone number to call in and ask questions live.
A few more articles to sift through for the librarian perspective:
- Podcasting Tech Summit (http://www.theshiftedlibrarian.com/archives/2005/08/12/podcasting_tech_summit.html)
- Library Podcast (http://librarianinblack.typepad.com/librarianinblack/2007/02/library_podcast.html)
- About Podcasts (http://distlib.blogs.com/distlib/2006/05/podcasts_about_.html)
Also, what would a great podcast be without sound effects? Spruce up your podcast with sound effects from the Absolute Sound Effects Archive (http://www.grsites.com/sounds/), which has almost 2,000 free sound effects.

Things To Do
- Add articles and program links to your del.icio.us account.
- Write a blog post about podcasting - how could libraries use podcasting to promote services? Does your library have a podcast?
- To create a podcast, you need a microphone, headphones, and proper software on your computer. If you can put these tools together, try recording a podcast. Link to it from, or upload it to your blog.
