Description

The OSU Libraries Research log was created collaboratively by Writing Program faculty and OSU Instruction librarians. Using this tool, students document the early stages of their research process.

The research log is made up of six linked assignments which take the student from the point of topic selection, to the formulation of their working thesis. They can be assigned and graded by the librarian, the classroom instructor, or some combination of the two. In WR 121 at OSU, this project is followed closely by an instruction session in the library.

The research process modeled by the Research Log assignments is based on the Conversational Model of Research articulated by Jeanne Davidson and Carole Ann Crateau. In particular, it encourages students to broadly explore a general topic area before narrowing to a focus.
