The process of gathering data to measure student learning. Instruction librarians can use assessment to see how well they are doing what they are doing, and to improve what they are doing.

Assessment methods can be used to measure the effectiveness of an activity, course, curriculum or program. It can be done at several points throughout the learning process (formative assessment) or at the endpoint (summative assessment).
